You could say that the girl group that had the biggest influence on pop culture and had a huge impact on fashion  in the 1990s was the Spice Girls.  Each member of the band had their own unique sense of style and chose their own clothes. Being so popular meant that most of the world would inevitably notice what they were wearing and how this matched their respective personalities.

Overall Look

The band sold millions of records worldwide and were an overnight sensation – a true success story. Even though they did not remain a band for very long, their influence was far-reaching. This was particularly true in respect to young women who were looking for good role models. The Spice Girls were all about “girl power” and expressing their individuality which was evident in the way they dressed. Unlike other girl bands at the time, they proved to young girls that uniqueness was not only acceptable but desirable.

Many of their fashion choices have been emulated by young women; from their shoes, be it platforms or sneakers, to their hairstyles. In fact, the girls started several fashion trends that quickly became popular during the late 1990s.

One of these trends was animal print clothing. This was made popular by Melanie Brown (also known as Mel B). She was nicknamed Scary Spice by the media and was known for wearing bold animal prints. Some of the items she wore included fairly low slung leopard print one-pieces.

Individual Styles

Sporty Spice was the nickname given to Melanie Chisholm (known as Melanie C). Her nickname came from the fact that she would usually wear clothes associated with, you guessed it – sports. Her wardrobe often consisted of comfortable tracksuits and sneakers. This type of clothing became very popular in the UK. Melanie C made it seem perfectly acceptable to wear a full tracksuit with sneakers to even formal events. This is a trend that is still seen among young people today.

Victoria Beckham, otherwise known as Posh Spice, has been credited for making the little black dress, a necessary addition to every woman’s closet. She was nicknamed Posh Spice because she often dressed in a more sophisticated and “posh” manner in comparison with the other individuals in the band. She has since gone on to establish a very successful clothing line where her brand has been described as very classy.

The girl nicknamed Ginger Spice, Geri Halliwell, was all about wearing clothing that could be described as glamorous and bold. She would choose clothes like dresses that were covered with shiny sequins or outrageous platforms. In addition, she was known for wearing the Union Jack flag as a dress.

Even Baby Spice, Emma Bunton, had her own style of whimsical and cute clothes, and was known for wearing her hair in pigtails. She has, like Victoria Beckham, entered the fashion world and has been involved in designing a line of children’s clothing.
